What you need to know

This task is about recognizing how your own physiology and psychology can degrade performance in the cockpit, then catching it before it causes an error. Know the aeromedical basics — hypoxia, fatigue, dehydration, illness, and stress all erode judgment and reaction time, often without you feeling impaired. Be able to name the classic hazardous attitudes (anti-authority, impulsivity, invulnerability, macho, resignation) and their antidotes, since ATP questions like to test whether you can identify which attitude a described behavior reflects. Understand how distractions and high workload cause loss of situational awareness or disorientation by breaking down your task prioritization, and know the difference between confirmation bias (only noticing info that supports what you already believe) and expectation bias (perceiving what you expect to see rather than what's actually there) since both can make you miss a changed instrument reading or clearance. Finally, be ready to apply a personal fitness-for-flight self-assessment (such as IMSAFE) and explain how you'd use it to decide whether to fly.
