What you need to know

Rough water landings are about accepting a firmer, less predictable touchdown rather than trying to grease it on—the goal is a nose-high, tail-low attitude with reduced power so the airplane settles onto the water at minimum controllable speed and lets the hull or floats absorb the impact rather than skipping or nosing in. Because wave height and swell direction can hide the true surface, you fly a stabilized approach with airspeed control (gust factor added), constant pitch attitude, and be ready to hold that attitude through touchdown rather than flaring and rounding out like on smooth water. On amphibious aircraft, verifying gear is UP for water operations is a critical, checklist-driven item—landing gear-down on water is catastrophic, so it belongs in your pre-landing flow every time.
