What you need to know

Flying an arrival (STAR) well is about staying ahead of the airplane: verify the correct procedure and transition are loaded and displayed correctly before you need it, cross-check raw navigation data against the FMS, and brief altitude/speed restrictions with your crew so everyone knows what's coming next. When ATC clears you "direct" a fix, assigns a heading, or says to discontinue or resume lateral or vertical navigation, you must understand exactly what that does to your automation—know when the autopilot/FMS is still following the charted path versus when you're now hand-managing it—and reprogram or intervene promptly rather than assuming the box will sort it out. Traffic displays (like TCAS/TAS) are advisory only; they help build awareness but don't guarantee separation, so you're still required to see and avoid other traffic when conditions allow, and you can't rely on automation or traffic equipment as a substitute for basic airmanship. Bottom line: know your equipment's limits, manage automation actively rather than passively, communicate clearly with ATC and your crew, and always fly the current charted procedure exactly as published unless ATC amends it.
