What you need to know
Holding is about managing three things at once: fuel, entry, and drift correction. When you get an EFC time, immediately recompute how much fuel you'll have left at the fix versus what you need to fly to your alternate plus reserves — if that math gets tight, tell ATC you're approaching minimum fuel well before it becomes an emergency, since 'minimum fuel' is a heads-up, not a distress call, but delaying the report is what turns a manageable situation into one. Determine entry (parallel, teardrop, or direct) based on your inbound course relative to the holding radial, then correct progressively for wind on each leg — outbound heading and timing get adjusted so your inbound leg tracks the correct course and you cross the fix as close as possible to the required time. Always slow to the appropriate holding speed before or at the fix, respect any charted leg-length or DME limits, and if you're in icing, factor in the extra fuel burn and possible speed/altitude restrictions that come with anti-ice systems running, since icing can quietly erode the fuel margin you were counting on.
