How to become an A&P mechanic

The path to your Airframe & Powerplant certificate — the written tests are the part you study for.

  1. 1

    Meet the eligibility basics

Be at least 18, and able to read, write, speak, and understand English.

  2. 2

    Get the knowledge

Either graduate from an FAA-approved (Part 147) AMT school, or document the required hands-on maintenance experience (commonly ~18 months for one rating, ~30 months for both) — verify with your local FSDO.

  3. 3

    Pass the three written tests

General, Airframe, and Powerplant. This is what we help you prepare for.

  4. 4

    Pass the oral & practical

A Designated Mechanic Examiner tests your hands-on knowledge for each rating.

  5. 5

    Apply for your A&P certificate

Submit your results and earn your Airframe & Powerplant mechanic certificate.

Always confirm current eligibility and experience requirements at faa.gov/mechanics.
