Restricted Area

What is restricted area?

FAA handbook figure illustrating restricted area

Restricted areas are blocks of airspace, designated under federal regulation, where flight isn't completely prohibited but is subject to restrictions because of hazards to aircraft such as artillery fire, aerial gunnery, or guided missiles. When the area is "active," you need permission from the controlling agency to fly through; when it's "cold" (inactive), you may be cleared through. Think of it as airspace where invisible dangers may be present—enter only with permission.
