Alert Area

What is alert area?

FAA handbook figure illustrating alert area

An alert area is a type of special use airspace shown on aeronautical charts to warn pilots of a high volume of pilot training or an unusual type of aeronautical activity occurring there. Flight is not restricted, but all pilots—both those participating in the activity and those just passing through—are equally responsible for collision avoidance and must remain vigilant. Think of it as a "heads up, lots going on here" zone: you can fly through, but keep your eyes outside.
