Hypoxia means "reduced oxygen" or "not enough oxygen" reaching the body's tissues. The brain is especially vulnerable, so even small reductions in oxygen can impair mental function and lead to dangerous errors in flight. It can result from too little oxygen available, poor transport of oxygen in the blood, or the tissues being unable to use it—giving four forms: hypoxic, hypemic, stagnant, and histotoxic. Think of it as your brain running on empty, often without you realizing it.

Also known as: hypoxic hypoxia, hypemic hypoxia, stagnant hypoxia, histotoxic hypoxia
