Autokinesis
What is autokinesis?
Autokinesis is a nighttime visual illusion in which a single, stationary light viewed against a dark background appears to move on its own after you stare at it for several seconds. A disoriented pilot may dangerously maneuver the aircraft trying to "chase" or align with this false motion. To prevent it, avoid fixating on a single light—keep your eyes moving and cross-check with other references. Think of it as your eyes inventing movement when they have nothing else to lock onto.
