Initial Approach Fix

What is initial approach fix?

The fix shown on an instrument approach procedure (IAP) chart where the approach officially begins, unless Air Traffic Control authorizes something different. It marks the transition from the en route or arrival phase into the structured approach toward the runway. Think of it as the "starting gate" of the published approach.

Also known as: IAF, initial approach fix
