Induced Drag
What is induced drag?
Induced drag is the drag created as a byproduct of producing lift. As the wing generates lift, high-pressure air spills around the wingtips to the low-pressure upper surface, forming wingtip vortices that pull back on the aircraft. It increases with angle of attack and is therefore greatest at low airspeeds, where a high angle of attack is needed to maintain lift—and it drops to zero when the wing isn't producing lift. Think of it as the "price you pay" for lift: slower flight means more induced drag.
