What is takeoff distance?
Takeoff distance is the total ground and air distance an airplane needs to accelerate from a standing start, lift off, and climb to a specified screen height (typically 35 feet for transport-category airplanes). The Takeoff Distance Available (TODA) is the length of the takeoff runway plus any clearway provided beyond it. Think of it as: not just the roll to liftoff, but everything up to clearing that 35-foot obstacle height — and TODA tells you how much room (runway plus clearway) you're allowed to use.
