What is cylinder head temperature?
Cylinder head temperature (CHT) is a measurement of how hot a reciprocating (piston) engine's cylinder head is, displayed to the pilot on a gauge or indicator. The reading is obtained using a thermocouple attached to one or more cylinders, and a selector switch can be used to read the temperature of individual cylinders. Monitoring CHT helps detect overheating before it damages the engine. Think of it as the engine's "fever check"—too hot means you need more cooling airflow or a richer fuel mixture.
