What is dry adiabatic lapse rate?
The dry adiabatic lapse rate (DALR) is the steady rate at which a parcel of unsaturated (non-cloudy) air cools as it rises and expands, without exchanging heat with the surrounding air. This rate is a constant 3°C per 1,000 feet of altitude gained. Think of it as the cooling rate for "dry" rising air, as long as no condensation occurs.
