Dual Ignition
What is dual ignition?
Dual ignition is an aircraft reciprocating-engine ignition system that has two complete, independent sets of every critical component—including two spark plugs in each cylinder, each fired by a separate magneto. This redundancy increases engine reliability (if one system fails, the other keeps the engine running) and also improves combustion for more efficient, even burning of the fuel-air mixture. Think of it as a built-in backup: that's why your runup checks each magneto separately to confirm both ignition circuits work.
