High-Performance and Complex Aircraft Endorsement Requirements

Before you can act as pilot-in-command (PIC) of a high-performance aircraft or a complex aircraft, federal regulations require you to receive and log ground and flight training from an authorized instructor, who then provides a one-time logbook endorsement. These are two separate endorsements with two separate definitions, and many student pilots — even those close to the commercial certificate — mix them up. Getting them straight is essential both for the FAA knowledge test and for your real-world flying career.

A high-performance aircraft is defined in 14 CFR 61.31(f) as one with an engine of more than 200 horsepower. Note the word "more than" — an aircraft with exactly 200 hp does not qualify as high-performance. A complex aircraft is defined in 14 CFR 61.31(e) as one that has all three of the following: a retractable landing gear, flaps, and a controllable-pitch propeller. All three features must be present simultaneously. For a seaplane, 14 CFR 61.31(e) exempts the retractable landing gear requirement entirely — a complex seaplane only needs flaps and a controllable-pitch propeller. Turbine-powered airplanes are not classified as complex under this definition; rather, 14 CFR 61.129 treats turbine-powered airplanes as a separate, additional category alongside complex aircraft for purposes such as the commercial practical test aircraft requirement.

Why it matters

High-performance and complex aircraft demand a higher level of systems knowledge and cockpit management. A retractable-gear aircraft introduces the risk of a gear-up landing if the pilot forgets to extend the landing gear — a costly and dangerous mistake. Controllable-pitch propellers require managing manifold pressure and RPM together, a coordination task absent in fixed-pitch aircraft. Higher horsepower demands respect for torque and propeller effects during takeoff. The endorsement system ensures that every PIC of these aircraft has received specific instruction in their unique handling characteristics before ever flying them solo or commercially. As a commercial pilot candidate, you will almost certainly need at least the complex endorsement, since the commercial practical test in an airplane requires either a complex or technically advanced aircraft (TAA) under 14 CFR 61.129.

Training requirements

To receive either endorsement, you must receive and log:

  • Ground training from an authorized instructor on the systems and operations specific to that category of aircraft.
  • Flight training from an authorized instructor in the actual aircraft (or in a full flight simulator or flight training device that represents that category).

Once the instructor determines you are proficient, they enter a one-time logbook endorsement. There is no recurrency requirement — you do not need to renew the endorsement periodically. However, you must have received the endorsement before acting as PIC of that type of aircraft. The endorsement for high-performance aircraft does not substitute for the complex endorsement, and vice versa. If you want to fly an aircraft that is both high-performance and complex — which is common, since many complex airplanes also exceed 200 hp — you need both endorsements.

For the complex aircraft definition, remember the phrase "Flaps, Retract, Prop" — or FRP — standing for Flaps, Retractable gear, and controllable-Pitch propeller. All three must be present. If any one is missing, the aircraft is not complex under 14 CFR 61.31(e).

Common test traps

  • "More than" vs. "at least": High-performance means more than 200 hp. An airplane with exactly 200 hp is NOT high-performance. This specific threshold is a favorite on the knowledge test.
  • Mixing up the two endorsements: High-performance and complex are separate endorsements. A 300-hp aircraft with a fixed-pitch prop and fixed gear is high-performance but NOT complex. A 180-hp aircraft with retractable gear, flaps, and a constant-speed prop is complex but NOT high-performance.
  • Thinking the endorsement expires: Neither endorsement has a recurrency or expiration requirement. It is a one-time endorsement that stays in your logbook permanently.
  • Commercial practical test aircraft requirement: The commercial ACS requires a complex airplane, a turbine-powered airplane, or a TAA for the practical test. Simply flying a high-performance airplane with a fixed-pitch prop does not satisfy this requirement on its own.
