How the FAA knowledge test works

70% to pass

Every FAA knowledge test uses the same 70% passing score. Our readiness tracking shows when you’re consistently clearing that bar before test day.

Computer-based

You take the real test on a computer at an FAA-approved PSI testing center. Our questions are multiple-choice in the same format so there are no surprises.

Valid 24 months

A passing result is good for 24 calendar months — you must finish your practical test (checkride) within that window.

ACS-aligned

The FAA builds every test from the Airman Certification Standards. We map our questions to the current ACS, so you study exactly what’s tested today.

Requirements and question counts change — always confirm the current standards for your certificate at faa.gov.

FAA practice test FAQ

Are these the actual FAA exam questions?+

No — the FAA stopped publishing its live test questions more than 20 years ago, so no prep tool has them. Our questions are written to the current Airman Certification Standards (ACS), the same standards the FAA builds the real test from, so you study exactly what’s tested.

How many questions are on the FAA written test?+

It varies by certificate — the Private Pilot, Instrument, and Part 107 tests each have about 60 questions, while Commercial and ATP have 100 or more. Each of our practice tests mirrors the topic mix for that specific certificate.

What score do I need to pass the FAA knowledge test?+

You need 70% on every FAA knowledge test. Aviation Test Prep’s readiness tracking shows when you’re consistently scoring above that so you know you’re ready before you pay to sit the real exam.

How long are my FAA test results valid?+

A passing knowledge-test result is valid for 24 calendar months. You must complete your practical test (checkride) within that window, or the written result expires and you retake it.

Is the FAA practice test really free?+

Yes. The diagnostic above is free with no credit card. A free account unlocks a larger question set; paid plans add the Ace AI tutor, spaced-repetition Smart Review, and the full question bank with FAA reference deep-links.

Which FAA tests can I practice for?+

Every major certificate and rating — Sport, Recreational, Private, Commercial, and Airline Transport pilots; the Instrument Rating; Flight and Ground Instructor; the Part 107 Remote Pilot (drone) test; Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT); Aircraft Dispatcher; and Flight Engineer.
