Mixture Control

What is mixture control?

The mixture control is the cockpit lever that adjusts the ratio of fuel to air being delivered to the engine. Because air density decreases with altitude while fuel density stays the same, you "lean" the mixture (reduce fuel) as you climb to keep the fuel-air ratio correct, and "enrich" it as you descend. Pulling it all the way out reaches idle cutoff, which is also how you shut down the engine. Think of it as your altitude-compensating fuel knob: less air up high means less fuel needed.
