What is true airspeed?
True airspeed (TAS) is the actual speed at which the aircraft moves through the air. It is calibrated airspeed corrected for nonstandard pressure and temperature, so TAS increases with altitude even when the airspeed indicator reading stays the same. In standard atmosphere at sea level, TAS equals calibrated airspeed (CAS). Think of it as your "real" speed through the air mass—add a wind correction and you get groundspeed.
