The Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate stands at the pinnacle of FAA pilot certification. It is not simply a credential of prestige — it is a legal requirement to serve as pilot in command (PIC) of an air carrier aircraft operated under 14 CFR Part 121 (scheduled airline operations) and, in many cases, under Part 135 (commuter and on-demand operations). Understanding exactly what the FAA requires to earn this certificate is essential for any pilot charting a course toward a professional aviation career, and it is heavily tested on the ATP Airmen Knowledge Test.
The rules governing the ATP certificate are found primarily in 14 CFR Part 61, Subpart G, supplemented by requirements introduced by the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 (commonly called the "Pilot Certification Reform"), which added the ATP Certificate Multiengine course requirement and the academic prerequisite known as the ATP Certification Training Program (ATP CTP).
Basic Eligibility Requirements
Before a pilot can even apply for an ATP certificate, the FAA mandates that several foundational eligibility criteria be met. These are non-negotiable minimums found in 14 CFR §61.153.
- Age: An applicant must be at least 23 years old for the full unrestricted ATP certificate. However, a restricted privileges ATP (R-ATP) certificate may be issued at age 21 under specific pathways (discussed below).
- Citizenship or authorized status: The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien, or meet specific requirements for non-citizen applicants.
- Language: The applicant must be able to read, speak, write, and understand English.
- Medical certificate: A current First Class Medical Certificate is required to exercise ATP privileges as PIC. A Second Class medical may be held to act as required flight crewmember in a capacity other than PIC.
- Knowledge test: The applicant must pass the appropriate FAA ATP Airmen Knowledge Test.
- ATP CTP (for multiengine ATP): Before taking the knowledge test for a multiengine ATP, the applicant must complete an FAA-approved ATP Certification Training Program — a ground and simulator training course mandated since 2014.
- Practical test: Pass the ATP practical test (checkride) administered by an FAA examiner in accordance with the ATP Airmen Certification Standards (ACS).
Flight Hour Requirements
Flight experience requirements are the most complex part of ATP eligibility, and the FAA provides several pathways depending on how a pilot's hours were accumulated. The baseline requirement under §61.159 is 1,500 total flight hours for a standard ATP certificate. However, the regulations allow reduced minimums for certain qualifying graduates.
Standard 1,500-Hour Pathway
The standard applicant must log at least: 500 hours of cross-country flight time; 100 hours of night flight time; 75 hours of instrument flight time (actual or simulated, which may include time in an approved flight simulator or flight training device); and 250 hours as pilot in command, including 100 hours of cross-country PIC time and 25 hours of night PIC time. These must be logged in accordance with Part 61 logging rules.
Reduced-Hour Pathways (R-ATP)
Pilots who meet specific educational or military experience criteria may apply for an R-ATP certificate at 1,250 hours or 1,000 hours of total time, and at age 21 rather than 23. The R-ATP grants full ATP privileges when combined with an air carrier's Part 121 training program, but it lists the restriction "Holder does not meet ICAO standards" on the certificate.
- Military pathway (1,000 hours): Graduates of a military pilot training program may qualify at 1,000 total hours. This reflects the high-quality, intensive nature of military flight training.
- Four-year aviation university pathway (1,000 hours): Graduates of a four-year bachelor's degree program in aviation from an FAA-approved institution (listed under §61.160) who hold an instrument rating and a commercial pilot certificate may qualify at 1,000 hours.
- Two-year aviation school pathway (1,250 hours): Graduates of a two-year aviation program at an accredited university may qualify at 1,250 hours, again with the required commercial certificate and instrument rating.
It is critical to understand that the R-ATP does not allow PIC operations under Part 121 until the pilot has completed the air carrier's approved training program. The certificate itself confers the privileges; the restriction is lifted operationally through carrier qualification training.
The ATP Certification Training Program (ATP CTP)
Introduced following the Colgan Air Flight 3407 accident in 2009, the ATP CTP is a mandatory academic and simulator-based training course that must be completed before a pilot sits for the multiengine ATP knowledge test. It is not required for the single-engine ATP knowledge test. The course covers advanced aerodynamics, meteorology, air carrier operations, leadership and crew resource management (CRM), and upset prevention and recovery training (UPRT) in a full flight simulator. It typically totals at least 30 hours of ground training and 10 hours of flight training (including flight simulation). This is a significant departure from the pre-2013 system where any qualified pilot could simply study independently and take the written test.
Multiengine vs. Single-Engine ATP
The ATP certificate can be issued with either a single-engine or multiengine airplane category rating, or both. Part 121 airline operations always require the multiengine ATP. Single-engine ATP certificates exist and are tested, but their practical application is largely limited to specific Part 135 turbine-powered single-engine operations. The ATP CTP requirement and the more stringent knowledge test apply specifically to the multiengine ATP pathway.
Knowledge Test and Practical Test
The ATP knowledge test covers a broad range of subjects including regulations, weather, navigation, aircraft systems, and crew resource management. A passing score is 70% or higher. The test result is valid for 24 calendar months for the purpose of taking the practical test, the same validity window that applies to most other airman knowledge tests. The practical test is conducted per the current ATP ACS and requires demonstration of single-pilot and crew coordination competencies, including scenarios in aircraft systems knowledge, instrument procedures, and emergency management.
Why It Matters: Safety and the Law
The ATP requirement for Part 121 PIC operations exists because of tragic accident history. The Airline Safety and FAA Extension Act of 2010 codified the 1,500-hour requirement precisely because investigations — most notably into the Colgan Air crash near Buffalo — identified experience gaps as contributing factors. The requirement that every Part 121 first officer also hold an ATP certificate (or R-ATP) was a transformative change from the previous First Officer requirement of only a commercial pilot certificate. This dramatically raised the baseline experience of every flight crew operating scheduled airline service in the United States.

- Medical certificate class: Students frequently forget that a Second Class medical does not authorize PIC operations under ATP privileges. A First Class medical is required for Part 121 PIC; the First Class must be current.
- R-ATP vs. standard ATP privileges: The R-ATP is not a "lesser" certificate operationally once paired with Part 121 carrier training, but the certificate itself does contain a restriction. Confusing the restriction wording with an operational prohibition on any flying is a common error.
- ATP CTP applicability: The course is required only for the multiengine ATP. Candidates seeking a single-engine ATP are not required to complete the ATP CTP before testing.
- Knowledge test validity window: The ATP knowledge test is valid for 24 calendar months, the same window that applies to Private and Commercial knowledge tests — there is no special extended validity period for the ATP test.
