When the FAA introduced the Light-Sport Aircraft (LSA) category in 2004, it recognized that many owner-pilots would want to maintain their own aircraft without investing the years of training required for an Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certificate. The solution was a dedicated credential created under 14 CFR Part 65: the Light-Sport Aircraft Repairman Certificate. This certificate comes in two distinct ratings—the Maintenance rating and the Inspection rating—and understanding exactly what each authorizes, what it demands, and where it stops is critical knowledge for any sport pilot or prospective LSA owner. Misunderstanding these boundaries can leave you operating an improperly maintained aircraft and expose you to serious regulatory and safety consequences.
Regulatory Foundation
The LSA Repairman Certificate is codified in 14 CFR Part 65, Subpart E, specifically in sections 65.101 through 65.107. These rules work in conjunction with 14 CFR Part 91.327, which governs the airworthiness responsibilities of owners and operators of light-sport aircraft not issued a standard airworthiness certificate. Under Part 91.327, the owner of a factory-built special LSA (SLSA) must ensure the aircraft is maintained in accordance with the manufacturer's maintenance and inspection procedures—procedures developed to comply with the applicable industry consensus standards, such as ASTM International standards adopted by the manufacturer.
Crucially, the repairman certificate exists alongside the traditional A&P pathway, not as a replacement. A certificated A&P mechanic has always had the authority to maintain and inspect LSAs. The repairman certificate is an additional, narrower pathway designed specifically for owner-pilots of the LSA category.
Eligibility Requirements
Before examining the two ratings in detail, it helps to understand the baseline eligibility that applies to both. Under 14 CFR 65.101, an applicant for either rating must:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English.
- Demonstrate that they are the owner of the specific make and model of light-sport aircraft for which the certificate is sought.
- Successfully complete an FAA-accepted training course appropriate to the rating sought.
The ownership requirement is one of the most exam-tested facts in this topic area. The LSA Repairman Certificate is aircraft-specific: it is tied to the particular make and model you own at the time of certification. If you sell that aircraft and purchase a different make or model, the certificate does not automatically extend to the new aircraft. You would need to complete the required training again for that new make and model. Likewise, the certificate gives you no authority to work on a neighbor's LSA or an aircraft you are renting, even if it is the exact same make and model as your own.
The Maintenance Rating
The Maintenance rating is the more comprehensive of the two and carries correspondingly more demanding training requirements. Under 14 CFR 65.107, an applicant must complete an FAA-accepted training course of at least:
- 120 hours for a powered light-sport aircraft (airplane, weight-shift control, powered parachute, gyroplane, or powered lighter-than-air).
- 104 hours for a glider or unpowered lighter-than-air aircraft.
These training courses are developed and delivered by FAA-accepted providers—typically the aircraft manufacturer or a dedicated aviation training organization. The curriculum covers the specific systems, materials, and procedures relevant to the make and model in question.
With a Maintenance rating, the holder may perform preventive maintenance, major repairs, and major alterations on the specific SLSA they own, provided the work is performed in accordance with the manufacturer's maintenance procedures and any applicable consensus standards. This is a substantial privilege. Unlike the Inspection-only holder, a Maintenance rating holder can legally fix what they find. They can replace components, address structural discrepancies, and perform system overhauls—all within the scope defined by the manufacturer's documentation.
An important limitation: even the Maintenance rating does not authorize work on an aircraft beyond the make and model covered, and all work must follow the manufacturer's approved procedures. Improvising a repair technique not sanctioned by the manufacturer would take the work outside the scope of the certificate and could jeopardize the aircraft's airworthiness.
The Inspection Rating
The Inspection rating is a narrower credential designed for owners who want the ability to conduct their own annual condition inspection but do not need or want the full maintenance privileges. Training requirements are far shorter: an FAA-accepted course of at least 16 hours.
The sole operational privilege granted by the Inspection rating is the authority to perform the annual condition inspection on the specific make and model of SLSA the certificate holder owns. That condition inspection must be conducted following the manufacturer's published inspection procedures—there is no universal LSA inspection checklist. Each SLSA manufacturer produces an aircraft-specific inspection program as part of the consensus-standard compliance package, and the Inspection rating holder is bound to use that documentation.
A critical and commonly tested limitation: the Inspection rating does not authorize the holder to repair or alter the aircraft. If an Inspection rating holder discovers a worn component, a cracked fitting, or an out-of-tolerance measurement during the condition inspection, they cannot legally repair that item under the authority of the Inspection rating alone. The discrepancy must be referred to a Maintenance rating holder or a certificated A&P mechanic. Finding the problem and fixing the problem require two different levels of authority.
Condition Inspections: Frequency and Documentation
Under 14 CFR 91.327, a special LSA must receive a condition inspection at intervals not to exceed 12 calendar months. This is analogous in timing to the annual inspection required for standard-category aircraft under 14 CFR 91.409, but the legal basis and the personnel authorized to perform it differ. After completing a condition inspection, the Inspection rating holder must make a proper logbook entry—including the date, aircraft total time, and a statement that the aircraft has been inspected in accordance with the manufacturer's inspection procedures and found to be in a condition for safe operation (or, if not, documenting what discrepancies exist).
Failure to accomplish and document the condition inspection within the 12-month interval renders the aircraft not airworthy for operations under Part 91.327. This is a real-world compliance issue, not merely an academic one.
Experimental LSA vs. Special LSA
The LSA Repairman Certificate applies specifically to Special Light-Sport Aircraft (SLSA)—factory-built aircraft operating under a special airworthiness certificate in the light-sport category. For Experimental Light-Sport Aircraft (ELSA), including kit-built aircraft or aircraft converted from SLSA to ELSA status, the rules differ. ELSA owners generally have broader maintenance and inspection authority derived from the experimental aircraft framework, though FAA-accepted LSA repairman training is still often recommended and sometimes required depending on the aircraft's operating limitations. Students should be careful not to conflate SLSA and ELSA maintenance authority on the knowledge test.
Key Numbers and Rules
- Minimum age for either rating: 18 years old.
- Maintenance rating training: at least 120 hours (powered) or 104 hours (glider/unpowered lighter-than-air).

Common Test Traps
- Ownership is make-and-model specific: Selling your LSA and buying a different model invalidates your existing repairman certificate privileges for that new aircraft. New training is required.
- Confusing 120 hours with 16 hours: The Maintenance rating requires 120 hours (powered); the Inspection rating requires only 16. The exam frequently swaps these numbers.
- Inspection ≠ repair authority: An Inspection rating holder who discovers a defect during the condition inspection cannot legally fix it under that rating. Repairs require a Maintenance rating or an A&P.
- A&P authority is not eliminated: The repairman certificate is an additional pathway. A certificated A&P can perform LSA condition inspections and maintenance without any repairman certificate.
- SLSA vs. ELSA distinction: Do not apply SLSA repairman certificate rules to ELSA aircraft—the operating limitations of experimental aircraft govern maintenance authority for ELSA differently.
- Generic checklists do not apply: The condition inspection must use the specific manufacturer's procedures, not a generic form. This is a consensus-standard requirement embedded in the airworthiness framework for SLSAs.
