Constant-Airspeed Climbs & Descents
On instruments you frequently change altitude at a constant airspeed. You set a pitch and power for the desired airspeed, hold it with the scan, and lead the level-off so you roll out exactly on the new altitude and back at cruise airspeed.

Step by step
- 1Establish the climb or descent: adjust power and set the pitch on the attitude indicator for the target airspeed.
- 2Trim to hold the new attitude; verify the airspeed on the ASI and the trend on the VSI.
- 3Hold heading with bank control and keep the cross-check moving.
- 4Lead the level-off by about 10% of the vertical speed (e.g., 50–100 ft early for a 500–1,000 fpm rate).
- 5At level-off, smoothly adjust pitch to the level attitude and reset power for cruise/level airspeed.
- 6Re-trim and confirm altitude ±100 ft and airspeed back on target.
Tips & common errors
- Pitch sets the airspeed; power sets the rate — adjust both to hit the target speed and a reasonable rate.
- Lead the level-off (≈10% of the vertical speed) so you stop right on the assigned altitude.
- Common error: chasing airspeed with big pitch changes — use small, trimmed inputs.
- Re-trim at every attitude change so you can keep scanning instead of holding pressure.
