Recovery from Unusual Flight Attitudes
An unusual attitude is an unintended extreme pitch and/or bank, usually from distraction, turbulence, or spatial disorientation. By interpreting the instruments (not your senses), you quickly determine whether you are nose-high (approaching a stall) or nose-low (overspeeding) and apply the correct, prioritized recovery.

Step by step
- 1Recognize the unusual attitude from the instruments — trust them over your physical sensations (vertigo lies).
- 2Determine nose-high vs. nose-low by cross-checking the attitude indicator, airspeed (low/decreasing = nose-high; high/increasing = nose-low), and altimeter/VSI trend.
- 3Nose-HIGH (slow, climbing): add power, lower the nose to reduce AOA, and level the wings — power, pitch (down), bank, in that order.
- 4Nose-LOW (fast, descending): reduce power, level the wings, then smoothly raise the nose to the level attitude — power (reduce), bank (level), pitch (up).
- 5In both cases level the wings with coordinated aileron and rudder before making large pitch changes when nose-low (to avoid overstressing in a bank).
- 6Return to level flight, re-establish the cross-check, and resume normal control.
Tips & common errors
- Nose-high: add power, push, level. Nose-low: reduce power, level, then pull — wings level before pulling so you do not over-G.
- Believe the instruments — recover by reference to them, not to the seat-of-the-pants feel.
- Make smooth but prompt inputs; abrupt control near limits can overstress the airframe or cause a secondary stall.
- Common error: pulling hard while still banked when nose-low (high load factor) — level first.
