How to Read a Sectional Chart (A Beginner-Friendly Guide)

A VFR sectional chart is drawn at a scale of 1:500,000 and packs an enormous amount of information into color, line style, and symbol. Reading one quickly — airspace, terrain, airports, obstacles, and frequencies at a glance — is a core skill the FAA tests heavily, and the whole system is decoded in the chart's legend.
Airports
Airport color tells you the type of air traffic control: blue symbols are towered fields, magenta symbols are non-towered. The symbol itself hints at the runways and services — a plain circle, the runway layout, ticks around the circle for fuel and services, and a small "R" for a private field. Data printed by the airport gives elevation, longest runway length, and the CTAF/tower frequency.
Airspace — the Color and Line Code
- Class B — solid blue lines (the layered "upside-down wedding cake"), with altitudes shown as fractions.
- Class C — solid magenta lines, usually two rings.
- Class D — dashed blue lines, with the ceiling in a dashed box (in hundreds of feet MSL).
- Class E to the surface — dashed magenta lines.
- Class E starting at 700 ft AGL — a fading magenta vignette (shaded edge).
- Class E starting at 1,200 ft AGL — a fading blue vignette.
Reading airspace floors and ceilings off these lines and fractions is one of the most common sectional questions on the test.
Terrain and Obstacles
Elevation is shown by contour lines and color banding — greens for low terrain climbing through tans to browns for high terrain. In each latitude/longitude quadrangle a large Maximum Elevation Figure (MEF) gives the highest obstacle or terrain in that block (in thousands and hundreds of feet MSL) — your quick terrain-clearance check. Obstructions like towers appear as symbols with their top height MSL and the height AGL in parentheses; a bracket means it's over 1,000 ft AGL.
Navigation Aids and Airways
VORs are marked with a compass rose oriented to magnetic north, inside a box listing the name, frequency, and Morse identifier. Victor airways (light blue lines with a "V" number) connect them for low-altitude navigation. Latitude and longitude tick marks let you measure position and, with the scale, distance.
How to Practice
Keep the legend open next to the chart until the symbols are automatic, then quiz yourself: pick a random airport and state its airspace, floor and ceiling, CTAF, field elevation, and the MEF for its quadrant. On the exam you'll be given a chart excerpt and asked to identify the airspace over a point, the ceiling of a Class D, the meaning of a vignette, or the height of an obstacle.
