Starting flight training is exciting — and a little overwhelming. Between scheduling lessons, studying for the FAA written, and learning to actually fly the airplane, it's easy to overspend on gear you don't need and skip the things that genuinely make training smoother, cheaper, and safer.

This is the list we wish every student pilot had on day one, ordered roughly by how much each item pays you back — in comfort, in retained knowledge, and in flight hours you don't have to repeat. Where it helps, we've linked to where you can find each item; prices are ballpark and change often.

A note on money: flight training is expensive enough. You do not need to buy everything at once. Items 1–4 are worth getting before you start; the rest you can add as you go. And the single highest-return "purchase" on this list — solid knowledge-test prep — can start completely free.

You'll wear it every hour of every flight, and it protects your hearing. The David Clark H10-13.4 is the bulletproof passive classic; an ANR headset like the Faro G2, Lightspeed Sierra, or Bose A30 means a quieter cockpit and less fatigue. Ask whether your school loans headsets while you decide.

A tablet + electronic flight bag (EFB) app

Most schools expect one

A tablet + electronic flight bag (EFB) app

An iPad (the iPad Mini is the cockpit favorite) running ForeFlight or Garmin Pilot replaces a bag of paper charts and makes planning, weather, and navigation far easier. A used or previous-generation Mini works fine — add a RAM or kneeboard mount so it stays put in turbulence.

A simple kneeboard keeps clearances, checklists, and notes strapped to your leg where you can write without dropping anything. Get one with a tablet holder if you're flying with an EFB.

Before you're deep into flight hours you have to pass the FAA knowledge (written) test — and studying early means you arrive at lessons already understanding airspace, weather, and regulations instead of learning them twice. Safety upgrade

A backup GPS / ADS-B receiver

A portable ADS-B receiver — like a Sentry or Stratus — feeds subscription-free weather and traffic into your EFB and gives you a backup source of position and attitude. Not required to start, but a genuine safety upgrade once you're flying cross-countries.

An E6B flight computer (and the app)

You'll compute wind correction, groundspeed, fuel burn, and density altitude on an E6B. The knowledge test still assumes the manual "whiz wheel," so get the classic ASA E6B for the exam, then use an app for real-world speed. Practice with our free E6B tool.

A pilot logbook

Every hour you fly gets logged and endorsed — it's the legal record of your training. Many pilots keep a paper logbook (the ASA and Jeppesen books are standards) and a digital one that backs everything up. Start it on lesson one so you never reconstruct hours later.

Cheap upgrade

Non-polarized aviation sunglasses

Glare at altitude is real and eye fatigue makes long lessons harder. Get sunglasses that are not polarized — polarized lenses can black out glass-cockpit displays and hide glare on other aircraft's windscreens.

Small but matters

A fuel tester and a good flashlight

Two small preflight items: a fuel sampler/tester so you're never hunting for the school's, and a flashlight with a red-light mode for night flying and dark preflights (red preserves your night vision). Both are inexpensive at any pilot shop.

The core FAA handbooks (free)

The knowledge behind every lesson lives in a few free, public-domain FAA books — chiefly the Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge (FAA-H-8083-25) and the Airplane Flying Handbook (FAA-H-8083-3). Buy printed copies, or read every one free in our FAA Reference Library. Reading ahead of each lesson is the cheapest way to fly fewer hours.
