What is mechanical turbulence?
Mechanical turbulence is bumpy, disturbed airflow created when wind blows across obstructions on the ground—such as trees, buildings, or rough terrain—that interrupt the smooth flow of air. Its intensity increases with higher wind speed and rougher surfaces, so the faster the wind and the more uneven the ground, the greater the turbulence. Think of it as the "choppy water downstream of rocks in a river," but with air—expect it on approach and departure over built-up or hilly areas on a windy day.
