Before a small unmanned aircraft system (sUAS) leaves the ground on any flight under 14 CFR Part 107, the operator must pause and ask one critical question: is this aircraft registered with the FAA? Registration is not a bureaucratic afterthought — it is a legal prerequisite that links every aircraft to an accountable owner, supports accident investigation, and reinforces the concept that the national airspace is a shared, regulated resource. Understanding exactly when registration is required, how the process works, and what the rules demand of a remote pilot is essential knowledge for the Part 107 knowledge test and for legal, safe operations in the real world.
Registration of unmanned aircraft in the United States is governed by 14 CFR Part 48, which was created specifically for UAS. While manned aircraft have long been registered under Part 47, Part 48 provides a streamlined, online process tailored to the small UAS community. The rules apply to nearly every drone a Part 107 pilot is likely to fly commercially or recreationally.
Which Aircraft Must Be Registered
The registration requirement is triggered by weight. Under Part 48, a small unmanned aircraft must be registered if it weighs more than 0.55 pounds (250 grams) and less than 55 pounds (25 kilograms) at takeoff, including everything on board — payload, cameras, batteries, and accessories. This 0.55-pound threshold is commonly referred to as the "250-gram rule" in the drone community, and it is one of the most frequently tested facts on the Part 107 knowledge exam.
Aircraft that weigh 0.55 pounds or less are exempt from registration. However, an aircraft that starts life under 250 grams can cross that threshold the moment a camera, transmitter, or other accessory is attached. The operative weight is always the total takeoff weight, not the bare airframe weight listed on the box. Aircraft that weigh 55 pounds or more are not eligible for the simplified Part 48 process and must instead be registered under Part 47, the traditional aircraft registration system.
It is also important to note that aircraft flown exclusively indoors are not subject to FAA registration requirements, because indoor flights do not take place in the national airspace system. The moment an aircraft operates outdoors, even in a backyard or over private property, registration rules apply.
Who Must Register
The owner of the unmanned aircraft is responsible for registration — not necessarily the person flying it at any given moment. The registrant must be at least 13 years of age. If the owner is younger than 13, a person who is at least 13 years old (such as a parent or guardian) must register the aircraft on the owner's behalf. For operations under Part 107, the registrant must also be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident. Foreign nationals who do not hold permanent residency are not eligible to register under Part 48 and must instead register under Part 47 as a foreign civil aircraft owner.
How Registration Works Under Part 48
Part 48 offers two distinct methods of registration depending on how the aircraft will be operated:
- Recreational (Community-Based) Registration: Under this pathway, an individual registers themselves and receives a single registration number that may be applied to all of their personally owned recreational UAS. The registration fee is currently $5 per registration, and the registration is valid for three years. A single certificate covers multiple aircraft flown recreationally.
- Part 107 (Commercial/Civil) Registration: Each aircraft operated under Part 107 must be registered individually, with a unique registration number assigned to each specific unmanned aircraft. This means a pilot who owns five drones used commercially must have five separate registrations, each with its own number, its own certificate, and its own fee. The fee and validity period are the same — $5 and three years per aircraft.
Registration is completed online through the FAA DroneZone portal (faadronezone.faa.gov). The process requires the applicant to provide the aircraft make, model, and serial number, along with owner contact information. Upon completion, the FAA issues a Certificate of Aircraft Registration, which the remote pilot in command must make available for inspection upon request by the FAA, a law enforcement officer, or an authorized representative of a federal, state, or local government agency.
Marking the Aircraft
Registration is only half the requirement — the aircraft must also be physically marked with the registration number before it flies. The marking rules under Part 48 require the following:
- The registration number must be legible and in a location that makes it accessible for inspection.
- The number must be on an accessible exterior surface of the aircraft. Since the rule was amended effective February 25, 2019, the number may no longer be placed inside a compartment, even one accessible without the use of tools.
- The marking must be made in a way that is not easily removed — paint, permanent marker, engraving, or a label firmly affixed are all acceptable methods.
- There is no minimum font size specified for small UAS under Part 48, unlike the size requirements for manned aircraft under Part 45, but the marking must be legible.
Because the registration number must now be on an external surface, placing the marking inside the battery compartment is no longer compliant, even though battery compartments are typically accessible without tools. Some pilots engrave or paint the number directly on the airframe for maximum durability, or affix a label to an exterior surface such as the underside of an arm or the top of the fuselage. Either way, the goal is that the aircraft can be traced back to its registered owner if it is ever found after a crash, flyaway, or incident.
Why Registration Matters
Registration ties accountability to every flight. In the event of an accident, a near-miss with manned aircraft, or a flyaway, the FAA and law enforcement can use the registration number to identify the owner and hold them responsible. This traceability is a cornerstone of the FAA's integration strategy for UAS into the national airspace.
From a safety standpoint, registration also encourages operators to take the rules seriously. Knowing that an aircraft carries their name makes most operators more deliberate about where and how they fly. For Part 107 operations specifically, flying an unregistered aircraft exposes the remote pilot in command to civil penalties and potential certificate action — enforcement consequences that can follow a commercial pilot throughout their career.

- 0.55 lbs (250 g): Minimum takeoff weight that triggers the registration requirement.
- 55 lbs (25 kg): Maximum weight for Part 48 registration; heavier aircraft must use Part 47.

Common Test Traps
- Confusing the weight threshold: The magic number is more than 0.55 lbs — an aircraft that weighs exactly 0.55 lbs does not require registration. Always apply this to total takeoff weight, not bare airframe weight.
- One number for all vs. one number per aircraft: Recreational operators get one number for all their aircraft; Part 107 operators need a separate registration — and separate number — for each individual aircraft. Many test questions hinge on this distinction.
- Who registers vs. who flies: The owner registers the aircraft, not necessarily the pilot who operates it commercially. A drone rental company, for example, is responsible for ensuring its aircraft are registered before a contracted pilot uses them.
- Indoor flight exemption: Indoor flights are exempt from the registration requirement entirely. Test questions sometimes describe a scenario that is entirely indoors to see if students incorrectly apply the registration rule.
- External surface only (post-2019): Prior to 2019, 14 CFR 48.205 allowed marking inside a compartment openable without tools. The rule was amended effective 2019-02-25 in response to first-responder safety concerns and now requires the registration number to be readable on an external surface. Older study material and drone-community forums still repeat the outdated rule — the exam tests the current requirement.
