Crosswind Takeoff & Climb
A crosswind takeoff adds wind from the side. You hold aileron into the wind during the ground roll to keep the upwind wing from rising, then transition to a wind-correction crab once airborne so the airplane tracks the extended centerline.

Step by step
- 1Taxi onto the centerline and apply full aileron into the wind before adding power.
- 2Advance to full power smoothly; maintain centerline with rudder while keeping the upwind aileron deflected.
- 3As speed increases, gradually reduce aileron deflection just enough to keep the wings level on the wheels.
- 4Rotate at a slightly higher-than-normal speed and lift off positively to avoid settling back onto the runway and side-loading the gear.
- 5Once airborne, remove the slip and establish a crab (wind-correction angle) into the wind to track the centerline.
- 6Climb at Vy, holding the crab so the ground track stays aligned with the runway.
- 7Stay coordinated (ball centered) in the climb.
Tips & common errors
- Start with full aileron into the wind, then reduce it as aerodynamic effectiveness builds.
- Lift off cleanly and positively — a soft, early liftoff lets the airplane drift and side-load the gear.
- Common error: drifting off centerline after liftoff because the crab was not established promptly.
- Do not over-rotate; a slightly higher rotation speed gives crisp control authority.
