Short-Field Approach & Landing
The short-field landing puts the airplane down accurately at minimum speed so it can stop in the least distance. You fly a precise, stabilized approach at the POH short-field speed and aim to touch down at or just beyond a specified point with maximum braking.

Step by step
- 1Configure with full (short-field) flaps and trim for the POH short-field approach speed (often a bit slower than normal).
- 2Fly a stabilized, slightly steeper approach precisely aimed at the selected touchdown point.
- 3Control the aim point with power and airspeed with pitch, keeping the approach tightly stabilized.
- 4Reduce power during the round-out and touch down at minimum controllable airspeed with little or no float.
- 5Touch down on the mains at or just beyond your specified point with minimum energy.
- 6Immediately retract flaps (per POH), apply firm braking, and hold aft elevator (aerodynamic braking as appropriate).
- 7Maintain centerline; be prepared to go around if not stabilized or short.
Tips & common errors
- Precision over softness: the goal is the spot and minimum speed, not the smoothest touchdown.
- Carrying extra speed causes float and overshoots the spot — fly the exact target speed.
- Common error: high, fast, unstable approaches; gate the approach and go around if it is not stabilized.
- Maximum braking is most effective with weight on the wheels and flaps retracted (per POH).
ACS completion standards
The commonly-tested tolerances for this maneuver. Always confirm the current ACS for your certificate.
- Maintain approach airspeed ±10 knots (or +10/-5 per the ACS), stabilized.
- Touch down at or within 200 feet beyond a specified point, with no side drift and the axis aligned.
- Apply braking/technique to stop in the shortest distance consistent with safety.
