Soft-Field Approach & Landing
The soft-field landing touches down as softly and slowly as possible and keeps the nosewheel off the soft surface as long as possible. You fly a normal stabilized approach but carry a little power into the flare for a feather-light touchdown.

Step by step
- 1Configure with full flaps and fly a normal, stabilized approach at the recommended speed.
- 2In the round-out, keep a small amount of power on to cushion the touchdown and reduce the sink rate.
- 3Hold the airplane off with steadily increasing back-pressure for the softest, slowest possible touchdown on the mains.
- 4After the mains touch, keep full aft elevator to hold the nosewheel off the surface as long as possible.
- 5Reduce power smoothly and let the nosewheel settle gently only when elevator authority fades.
- 6Avoid braking on a truly soft field; let drag and the soft surface slow the airplane.
- 7Maintain directional control and keep the airplane moving if the surface is soft.
Tips & common errors
- A touch of power in the flare gives a slower, softer touchdown and better elevator authority to hold the nose up.
- Keep the nosewheel off the ground as long as possible — this is the defining feature of the maneuver.
- Common error: chopping power too early (firm touchdown) or letting the nose drop quickly.
- Minimize or avoid braking on soft surfaces to keep from digging in the nosewheel.

- Maintain approach airspeed ±10 knots, stabilized.
- Touch down softly at minimum descent rate with no drift and the axis aligned.
- Hold the nosewheel off the surface as long as possible during rollout.
