Soft-Field Takeoff & Climb
The soft-field takeoff gets the airplane airborne as soon as possible off a soft, rough, or unprepared surface, keeping weight off the wheels throughout. You keep the airplane moving, lift off at the lowest possible speed, and accelerate in ground effect before climbing.

Step by step
- 1Set the POH flap configuration; keep the airplane moving and avoid stopping on the soft surface.
- 2Hold full aft elevator while taxiing to keep weight off the nosewheel.
- 3Apply full power smoothly while rolling onto the runway, keeping back-pressure to raise the nose early.
- 4Lift off at the lowest possible airspeed as the wings begin to fly, even before normal rotation speed.
- 5Level off immediately in ground effect (a few feet up) and let the airplane accelerate there.
- 6When you reach Vx (obstacle) or Vy, establish the climb and gently retract flaps/gear per the POH.
- 7Maintain centerline and coordination throughout.
Tips & common errors
- Keep weight off the wheels the entire time — that is the whole point of the technique.
- Do not climb out of ground effect until you have a safe climb speed, or the airplane may settle back down (or stall).
- Common error: ballooning out of ground effect too soon, or letting the nosewheel drop onto the soft surface.
- Never stop on a soft surface with the nosewheel loaded — keep momentum and the nose high.

- Lift off at the lowest possible airspeed and remain in ground effect to accelerate.
- Climb at VX (obstacle) or VY +10/-5 knots as appropriate.
- Keep the nosewheel off the surface; maintain coordination and centerline.
