Airport Traffic Pattern
The traffic pattern is the standard rectangular path flown around a runway for departures and arrivals. Flying it precisely — correct legs, altitude, spacing, and radio calls — sets up every landing and keeps traffic predictable and separated.

Step by step
- 1Depart on the upwind/departure leg aligned with the runway, climbing on centerline.
- 2Turn crosswind (typically a 90° left turn for a standard left pattern) at a safe altitude, continuing the climb.
- 3Turn downwind and level at traffic pattern altitude (TPA), flying parallel to the runway, about ½–1 mile out.
- 4Abeam the intended touchdown point, reduce power and begin the descent; add the first flaps as appropriate.
- 5Turn base, continuing to configure and slow; judge wind drift and spacing from the runway.
- 6Turn final aligned with the centerline, stabilized at approach speed and on glidepath.
- 7Make the standard radio calls (or follow tower instructions) and clear for traffic on every leg.
Tips & common errors
- Standard patterns are left turns unless the chart/segmented circle indicates right traffic.
- Fly consistent legs and TPA so you and other traffic stay predictable and separated.
- Common error: a wide or close downwind that ruins base/final geometry; pick a repeatable distance.
- Always look for and announce traffic — see and avoid is the rule at non-towered fields.
ACS completion standards

- Maintain pattern altitude ±100 feet and the appropriate airspeed ±10 knots.
- Fly a stabilized, properly spaced pattern with correct wind-drift correction on each leg.
- Comply with traffic-pattern procedures, collision avoidance, and ATC/CTAF communications.
