How Night Vision Works — and Why It Matters for Night Flying
Before you can fly safely at night, you need to understand how your eyes function in low-light conditions. The human eye contains two types of photoreceptors: cones and rods. Rods are spread across the periphery of the retina and are far more sensitive to dim light — but they're nearly blind to color and take time to reach full sensitivity.
This is why dark adaptation is so critical. It takes roughly 30 minutes for your eyes to fully adapt to darkness. Exposing yourself to bright white light — even briefly — can reset this process and temporarily compromise your ability to see outside the cockpit. - Review terrain and obstacles: Study sectional charts carefully for terrain, towers, and obstructions along your route. Unlighted obstacles are a real hazard at night. Note any towers or structures with warning lights and their approximate locations.
- Plan for alternate airports: Night weather can deteriorate quickly, and diagnosing in-flight problems under cockpit lighting is harder than in daylight. Have at least one alternate airport ready and know how to declare it.
- File a flight plan: Even when not required, a VFR flight plan means someone will notice if you don't arrive. At night, this simple act is a meaningful safety net.
- Check NOTAMs carefully: Airport lighting outages, runway closures, and temporary flight restrictions are common in NOTAMs. A runway with inoperative edge lights is a very different landing environment than what you trained on.

Spatial Disorientation
Without a visible horizon, the vestibular system in your inner ear can generate powerful and convincing false sensations of attitude. The solution is disciplined instrument scanning — trust your instruments, not your body's sense of orientation.
Black Hole Approach Illusion
One of the most deceptive night hazards is the black hole approach. When approaching an airport surrounded by featureless dark terrain or water with no lights, your brain has no visual references to gauge your glide path. Pilots in this situation often perceive themselves as too high and instinctively lower the nose — leading to dangerously low approaches that can end in controlled flight into terrain. The antidote is to use the VASI or PAPI every time it's available, and to establish and monitor a consistent descent rate using your instruments rather than visual cues alone.
Runway Environment Illusions
Unlighted terrain between you and the runway, upsloping or downsloping runways, and varying runway widths all create illusions that are amplified at night. Always fly a stabilized approach to published minimums and use all available electronic guidance.
Night Flying Techniques in the Cockpit
