Steep Turns
A steep turn is a constant-altitude turn at a high bank angle (45° for Private, 50° for Commercial) through 360° (often 360° each way). It demonstrates coordination, load-factor awareness, and your ability to hold altitude as induced drag and required back-pressure increase steeply with bank.

Step by step
- 1Pick a prominent reference point or heading, clear the area with clearing turns, and note your entry altitude and heading.
- 2Roll smoothly into the target bank (45° PPL / 50° Commercial) while adding back-pressure to hold altitude.
- 3Add a little power as you roll in to offset the increased induced drag and maintain airspeed.
- 4Keep the ball centered (coordinated) and hold the bank constant with aileron and the pitch with elevator.
- 5Cross-check the altimeter, attitude, and airspeed continuously; correct altitude with small pitch changes, not by relaxing bank dramatically.
- 6Lead the rollout by about half the bank angle (roughly 20°) to roll out on the entry heading.
- 7Reverse direction if required and repeat in the opposite direction.
Tips & common errors
- Back-pressure and a touch of power go in as you roll in; take them out as you roll out.
- If the nose drops, reduce bank slightly while increasing back-pressure, then re-establish the bank — do not just pull harder at a steep bank (that tightens the turn and increases load).
- Common error: gaining altitude early (too much back-pressure) and losing it late (bank creeping up).
- Lead the rollout so you finish on the entry heading; trim can help offset the sustained back-pressure.

- Maintain entry altitude ±100 feet and airspeed ±10 knots.
- Maintain the specified bank ±5° (45° PPL / 50° Commercial).
