Turns Around a Point
You fly two or more complete, constant-radius circles around a single ground reference point while correcting for wind. The bank angle must change continuously through every 360° so the distance from the point never varies.

Step by step
- 1Select a prominent, isolated reference point (a tree, intersection, or silo) with no obstacles and a safe maneuvering altitude.
- 2Enter on a downwind heading, abeam the point, so you begin where groundspeed is highest.
- 3Roll into the steepest bank at the downwind entry; as the wind moves to a crosswind and then a headwind, gradually shallow the bank.
- 4On the upwind side, hold the shallowest bank; then steepen again as you turn back toward downwind.
- 5Keep the wingtip (or a point on the cowling) tracking a constant distance from the reference point throughout the circle.
- 6Maintain a constant radius for at least two complete circles, then roll out on the entry heading.
Tips & common errors
- Maximum bank is downwind, minimum bank is upwind, and the change is smooth and constant — never a fixed bank.
- Common error: drifting closer to or farther from the point because the bank lags the wind change.
- Pick a radius that keeps the steepest bank reasonable (typically not exceeding about 45°).
- Divide attention: glance at the point, the horizon, and altitude in a continuous scan.

- Maintain altitude ±100 feet.
- Maintain airspeed ±10 knots.
- Maintain a constant radius around the point by varying bank with groundspeed.
