Seaplane, Skiplane, and Float/Ski Handbook

The reference for seaplane, skiplane, and float/ski operations — water and snow operations, and the handling unique to these environments.

About this document

The Seaplane, Skiplane, and Float/Ski Equipped Helicopter Operations Handbook is the FAA's reference for flying from water and snow. It covers the aerodynamic and handling differences of floats and skis, water-taxi and step-taxi technique, glassy- and rough-water takeoffs and landings, docking and beaching, and the weather and site-selection judgment these operations demand.

It supports the single-engine sea (ASES) rating and related seaplane operations.
