Every aircraft drawing — whether it shows a wing rib, a hydraulic schematic, or an electrical harness — carries a standardized set of information boxes printed in its border. The two most important of these are the title block and the revision block. Think of it as the document's official identification card — it tells you exactly what you are looking at and sets the ground rules for interpreting everything else on the sheet.
Contents of the Title Block
While exact formats vary between manufacturers and organizations, FAA guidance identifies the following standard elements that a title block should contain:
- Drawing number: A unique alphanumeric identifier assigned to that specific drawing. This number is used for filing, referencing, and ordering. Never work from a drawing unless you have verified the drawing number matches your work order or maintenance manual reference.
- Drawing title / part name: A plain-language description of what the drawing depicts — for example, "BRACKET, AILERON CONTROL" or "SCHEMATIC, FUEL SYSTEM." This helps you quickly confirm you have the right drawing before studying the detail.
- Scale: The ratio at which the depicted object is drawn relative to its true size — for example, 1:1 (full scale), 1:2 (half scale), or 2:1 (double scale). When a feature is marked "NOT TO SCALE" or "NTS," you must never use a ruler on the drawing to derive dimensions; only annotated dimensions are valid.
- Sheet number and total sheets: Multi-sheet drawings are numbered, for example, "SHEET 3 OF 7." This tells you how many sheets belong to the set and confirms you have them all. Missing a sheet can mean missing assembly steps or critical notes.
- Date: The date the drawing was originally created or the date of the most recent approved release. This is a starting reference point; actual currency is tracked in the revision block.
- Drawn by, checked by, and approved by: The names or initials — and sometimes signatures — of the drafter, the checker who verified accuracy, and the approving authority. In certificated aviation work, the approving authority line confirms the drawing has gone through an engineering review process.
- Company or organization name and logo: Identifies the design organization responsible for the document. Important when multiple vendors supply drawings for the same aircraft.
- Material specification: Some title blocks include the primary material (e.g., "2024-T3 ALUMINUM ALLOY PER QQ-A-250/4"). Others list this on the drawing face or in a separate materials block immediately adjacent to the title block.
- Tolerances: General (or default) tolerances that apply to all dimensions on the drawing unless a specific tolerance is stated locally. A typical block might read: "DECIMAL: ±0.005 ANGULAR: ±0.5°." These are critically important — if you measure a feature and find it within the general tolerance, it is acceptable; if a dimension has its own stated tolerance, that local value overrides the general one.
- Finish or treatment: Surface treatment requirements such as anodizing, priming, or plating may appear here or in a finish block nearby.
- Next assembly: Some drawings list the drawing number of the next higher assembly that uses this part, which aids in tracing a component through a larger system.
What Is a Revision Block?
No engineering drawing stays unchanged throughout an aircraft's service life. Design improvements, regulatory compliance changes, error corrections, and material substitutions all require that the drawing be formally updated. The revision block (also called the revision history block or change block) is the official record of every approved change made to a drawing after its initial release. It is typically located in the upper-right corner of the drawing, directly above or adjacent to the title block.
Contents of the Revision Block
Each row in the revision block represents one approved change and normally contains the following columns:
- Revision symbol or letter: Changes are identified sequentially — typically with uppercase letters A, B, C, and so on (some organizations use numbers). The original, un-revised drawing is often called Revision — (dash) or Revision 0. The current revision letter is also recorded in the title block so you can see the drawing's revision status at a glance.
- Description of change: A brief narrative explaining what was altered — for example, "CHANGED HOLE DIAMETER FROM 0.250 TO 0.257 PER ECO 4471" or "ADDED NOTE 5 RE TORQUE REQUIREMENT." This description is your quick reference for understanding what is different without having to compare the drawing line by line against the previous version.
- Date: The date the revision was approved and incorporated into the drawing.
- Approved by: The initials or signature of the authority who approved the change. In certificated repair stations and under FAA oversight, this process ensures traceability.
- Zone or area affected: Many larger drawings are divided into a grid (like a map, with letters along one axis and numbers along the other — called a zone). The revision block may indicate which zone was affected, helping you find the changed area quickly on a complex drawing.
Why These Blocks Matter for AMTs
The practical stakes of title block and revision block literacy are high. Consider a scenario where a mechanic is fabricating a replacement bracket. If the drawing used is Revision B but the current approved drawing is Revision D, the mechanic may drill holes in the wrong locations, use a superseded material, or apply the wrong torque. The resulting part could be nonconforming — and in the worst case, structurally unsafe. FAA regulations and quality assurance systems require that maintenance be performed using current, approved data. The revision block is how you verify currency.
Similarly, the general tolerances in the title block govern the acceptability of every dimension without a local callout. An AMT who ignores the general tolerance block may accept parts that are actually out of specification — or reject perfectly good parts needlessly. In either case, misreading the title block causes real-world problems.
Key Numbers and Rules
- Scale of 1:1 means the drawing is full size. 1:2 means the object is twice as large in reality as it appears on the drawing. 2:1 means the object is drawn twice its real size (used for small parts).
- Always verify the current revision letter in the title block matches the latest entry in the revision block. If the title block says "REV D" but the revision block only lists changes through "C," there is a discrepancy — do not use the drawing until it is resolved.
- General tolerances override nothing — they are default values only. Any locally stated tolerance on a specific dimension takes precedence over the general tolerance in the title block.
- A drawing marked "NTS" (Not to Scale) for any feature means dimensions must be taken from annotated numbers only; physical measurement of the drawing is invalid for that feature.
- When a drawing set lists "SHEET 1 OF 5," you need all five sheets before beginning work. Partial drawing sets are not acceptable for certificated maintenance work.
- Revision symbols (triangles, flags, or clouds) are sometimes drawn on the face of the drawing near the changed area. These correspond to the revision letter in the revision block and help you locate exactly what changed.
Common Test Traps
- Confusing scale direction: A common trick is to state a scale of 2:1 and ask what the actual part dimension is. Remember — 2:1 means the drawing is larger than the part, so you divide the drawn measurement by 2, not multiply.
- Assuming the newest drawing is automatically current: Currency depends on the revision letter, not the original drawing date. An older drawing number at a higher revision letter may supersede a newer drawing number at a lower letter in a complex drawing family.
- Overlooking the general tolerance block: Test questions sometimes give a dimension without a specific tolerance and ask whether a measured value is acceptable. You must apply the general tolerance from the title block — don't assume zero tolerance or a round number.
- Ignoring the "next assembly" field: This field matters when you need to verify compatibility or find the larger system drawing. Neglecting it is a common shortcut that leads to installing a correct part in the wrong assembly.
- Missing sheets in a multi-sheet set: If a question describes a scenario where a mechanic only references Sheet 1 of a 3-sheet drawing, any answer that involves using incomplete data is the wrong approach — all sheets of a drawing set form a single document.
Mastering the title block and revision block is one of the most straightforward — yet most operationally important — skills an AMT develops. Before you touch a tool, read the block. Verify the part name, confirm the revision is current, note the scale, and record the applicable tolerances. That habit, applied consistently, is the foundation of accurate, compliant aircraft maintenance.
