These items are regulatory requirements mandated by the FAA to ensure that anyone operating or maintaining the aircraft has immediate visual access to critical limits, warnings, and identification data. Nationality and Registration Marks
U.S.-registered aircraft must display nationality and registration marks in accordance with 14 CFR Part 45. - Fixed-wing aircraft: Marks must appear on the fuselage or vertical tail surface. On the fuselage, they must be between the trailing edge of the last wing and the leading edge of the horizontal stabilizer. On the vertical tail, the marks must be displayed horizontally on each side of the tail; on aircraft with multiple vertical tail surfaces, the marks must appear on the outboard sides of the outer surfaces.
- Minimum size — standard aircraft: Letters and numbers must be at least 12 inches in height for aircraft other than those described below.
- Minimum size — light sport and smaller aircraft: Aircraft with a maximum cruising speed of 180 knots CAS or less may use marks at least 3 inches in height if displayed on each side of the fuselage or vertical tail, provided the aircraft was manufactured after a specified date per Part 45 provisions.
- Aircraft manufactured before November 1, 1981: May use marks at least 2 inches high if they previously met the then-applicable standard, subject to specific Part 45 grandfather provisions.

- Red radial line: Indicates a never-exceed limit (VNE on the airspeed indicator, maximum and minimum limits on other gauges). Operating beyond a red line is prohibited.
- Yellow arc: Caution range — operations in this range are allowed only in smooth air and with caution. On the airspeed indicator, the yellow arc runs from VNO (maximum structural cruising speed) to VNE.
