Flying demands sharp attention, sound judgment, and the ability to process a stream of changing information — all at the same time. When a pilot is stressed, emotionally upset, or mentally fatigued, each of those capacities erodes in ways that are not always obvious from the inside. In fact, one of the most insidious aspects of stress in the cockpit is that it can impair your ability to recognize that you are impaired. What Stress Actually Does to a Pilot

Stress is the body's physiological and psychological response to any demand placed on it. Not all stress is harmful — a modest level of arousal actually sharpens alertness and improves performance. This relationship is described by the Yerkes-Dodson principle, which the FAA Risk Management Handbook (FAA-H-8083-2) references to explain that performance peaks at a moderate level of stress and degrades at both extremes.   • Delay the flight: The most conservative and safest option. Aircraft can wait; funerals, arguments, and crises cannot be un-experienced before a flight just because you want to go flying.
  • Delegate tasks: Flying with a qualified co-pilot or CFI when you recognize impairment shifts some cognitive burden to another person and adds a safety check.
  • Use checklists aggressively: When stress narrows attention, checklists externalize memory demands and impose systematic procedure on a brain that wants to cut corners.
  • Slow down: Declare a personal minimum and stick to it. Under stress, pilots often accept conditions they would normally reject. Predetermined personal minimums remove the in-flight negotiation with your impaired self.
  • Communicate: Tell your passengers, your CFI, or ATC if something is not right. Asking for help is a sign of sound judgment, not weakness.

  • Mixing up the alcohol rules: The limit is 8 hours bottle-to-throttle AND 0.04% BAC AND not under the influence — all three conditions apply simultaneously under 14 CFR 91.17.
  • Forgetting emotion as its own IMSAFE item: Test questions sometimes list IMSAFE components and include distractors that omit "emotion" or swap it for something else. Know all six items cold.
  • Misidentifying hazardous attitudes: Stress amplifies the five hazardous attitudes. Questions may describe a pilot behavior and ask which attitude it represents. Stress does not create a sixth attitude — it makes the existing five worse.
