These are not character flaws found only in reckless pilots. They are predictable, documented quirks of human cognition that affect experienced airline captains and first-time private pilots alike. What Get-There-Itis Actually Is

The FAA classifies it under the broader hazardous attitude category of invulnerability — the feeling that bad outcomes happen to other pilots, not you — combined with external pressure, whether real or self-imposed.

The pilot has a powerful goal: make it to a wedding, get home to the family, deliver a passenger on time, avoid missing a business meeting. That goal becomes emotionally charged. Once motivation is high enough, the brain begins unconsciously filtering incoming information, favoring data that supports continuing and discounting data that argues for stopping. This is not a deliberate lie to oneself — it is an automatic cognitive process.
Common sources of external pressure that fuel get-there-itis include: passengers who are counting on the pilot, financial costs of an overnight delay, embarrassment about canceling, and employer expectations. But the pressure can also be entirely internal — the pilot's own pride, desire to prove competence, or discomfort with disappointing others. The FAA's Risk Management Handbook specifically notes that self-imposed pressure is often more powerful than actual external demands, because the pilot imagines consequences that may be far worse than reality.
What Continuation Bias Is
Continuation bias is a closely related but subtly different concept. Where get-there-itis is about wanting to reach a destination, continuation bias is the tendency to continue any plan of action already in progress, even as evidence mounts that the plan should be abandoned. Psychologists sometimes call this "plan continuation error" or the sunk-cost fallacy applied to decisions in real time.
The mechanism works like this: once a pilot is airborne and committed to a route, turning back or diverting feels like failure. Every mile flown represents a sunk cost — fuel burned, time spent, expectations set. The brain assigns greater psychological weight to those sunk costs than logic warrants. At the same time, the pilot keeps expecting conditions to improve "just a little further ahead," an expectation that feels more comfortable than accepting the flight needs to end differently than planned.
Continuation bias is particularly insidious because it worsens as the flight progresses. Early in a flight, a pilot might readily accept a diversion. But after two hours en route, with the destination only forty miles away and weather deteriorating, the same pilot finds it psychologically much harder to turn around — even though from a pure safety standpoint, the math now clearly favors diverting. - Confusing the hazardous attitude: Get-there-itis is most closely linked to the invulnerability hazardous attitude and external pressure, not to "anti-authority" or "impulsivity." Know all five FAA hazardous attitudes and their antidotes.
- Thinking it only affects low-time pilots: FAA accident data and the Risk Management Handbook make clear that high-time, experienced pilots are also victims — sometimes more so, because experience breeds overconfidence.
- Overlooking self-imposed pressure: Test questions may describe a scenario where no one is explicitly demanding the pilot fly. The correct answer still identifies self-imposed pressure as the hazard, because imagined expectations are just as dangerous as real ones.

- Forgetting the antidote step: Recognizing a hazardous attitude is only half the answer. The FAA's ADM model requires applying the specific antidote thought. For invulnerability/get-there-itis: "It could happen to me." For continuation bias in a scenario question, look for the answer choice that describes stopping and reassessing rather than pressing on.
Ultimately, the pilot who internalizes these concepts is not the one who never feels the pull of get-there-itis — every pilot does.
