The FAA's 5P Check is a practical, structured tool designed to help pilots — especially those flying single-pilot, general aviation aircraft — pause and systematically evaluate risk at key moments before and during flight. Rather than a one-time preflight checklist, the 5P Check is meant to be revisited repeatedly: before engine start, during the cruise phase, before descent, and again on final approach. 3. Pilot

4. Passengers
"Passengers" recognizes that the people in the aircraft with you are a significant factor in the risk equation — both as potential sources of pressure and as individuals whose needs must be considered. Passenger pressure is a well-documented contributor to accidents: a pilot who feels social or emotional pressure to complete a flight may push past personal minimums or ignore deteriorating conditions to avoid disappointing family members, a boss, or a client.
Ask: Are my passengers creating any subtle or overt pressure on me to continue? Are they managing well physically — do any feel airsick, claustrophobic, or anxious in a way that could distract me at a critical moment? Are there time constraints associated with passengers (a meeting, a wedding) that might tempt me to press on? The antidote is to establish clear expectations before the flight: the pilot-in-command makes all go/no-go decisions, and passenger comfort and safety matter more than schedule.
5. Programming
"Programming" refers to the cockpit automation and avionics systems — GPS navigators, autopilots, flight management systems, weather datalinks, and electronic flight bags. In the modern GA cockpit, a pilot can become so focused on programming a route change into the GPS that they lose situational awareness of what the airplane is actually doing. This is sometimes called "automation complacency" or "head-down time."
Ask: Is my autopilot doing what I think it is? Is the GPS loaded with the correct approach and destination? Did I verify the frequency and course when I loaded the ILS?
