Why Aviation Sectional Charts Are Essential for Every Pilot
Learning to read aviation sectional charts is one of the most rewarding skills you will develop as a student pilot. These colorful, detail-packed maps are the primary navigation tool for visual flight rules (VFR) flying, and understanding them thoroughly is critical for passing your FAA written knowledge test. Whether you are studying for your Private Pilot certificate or just getting started in aviation, this beginner's guide will walk you through the most important elements of sectional charts — what they show, how to read them, and how to use that knowledge on test day.

What Is an Aviation Sectional Chart?
A sectional aeronautical chart is a 1:500,000 scale topographic map published by the FAA's Aeronautical Information Services and updated every six months. The name comes from the fact that the contiguous United States is divided into 37 sections, each named after a major city or geographic feature — for example, the Los Angeles Sectional or the Chicago Sectional. Pilots use these charts to plan routes, identify airspace boundaries, locate airports, and avoid terrain obstacles during VFR flight.
Because so much information is packed onto a single chart, the FAA provides a Chart Supplement (formerly called the Airport/Facility Directory) and a legend printed on the chart itself to help pilots decode every symbol. Getting familiar with that legend is your first step.
The Building Blocks: Colors, Contours, and Terrain
The color scheme on an aviation sectional chart is not random — each color carries specific meaning:
- Green shading represents low elevation terrain, transitioning through tan and brown to indicate progressively higher ground.
- Blue and magenta are used extensively for aviation-specific information such as airways, airports, and airspace designations.
- Contour lines show changes in elevation and help pilots visualize hills, valleys, and mountains at a glance.
- Obstacle symbols (towers, smokestacks, and similar structures) appear with associated elevation figures shown in two numbers — the top number is mean sea level (MSL) elevation and the bottom number, in parentheses or brackets, is the height above ground level (AGL).
Understanding terrain depiction is particularly important for mountain flying and for answering density altitude and obstacle clearance questions on the FAA written test.
Reading Airport Symbols on Sectional Charts
Airports are identified by distinct symbols that tell you a great deal at a glance:
- Blue airport symbol — indicates a towered airport (one with an operating control tower).
- Magenta airport symbol — indicates a non-towered airport.
- Hard-surface runway icon — the tick marks around the symbol show the number and orientation of paved runways.
- Soft-field or seaplane base icons — shown with slightly different symbols and colors.
Beneath or beside each airport symbol you will find a data block listing the airport's name, elevation in feet MSL, the control tower frequency (CT), UNICOM or CTAF frequency, and other services available. Being able to read these data blocks quickly is a skill tested directly on FAA knowledge exams.
Decoding Airspace Boundaries
Airspace is arguably the most complex topic depicted on an aviation sectional chart, and it is heavily tested on the written exam. Here is a quick breakdown of how different airspace classes appear:
- Class B airspace — solid blue lines forming an upside-down wedding-cake shape around the busiest airports. Altitude floors and ceilings are labeled on each ring (e.g., 100/SFC means from the surface up to 10,000 feet MSL).
- Class C airspace — solid magenta lines, typically two concentric circles with floor/ceiling labels.
- Class D airspace — dashed blue lines forming a circle around airports with a part-time or full-time control tower.
- Class E airspace — this is the most abundant airspace and is shown in several ways, most commonly as a dashed magenta line indicating where Class E begins at 700 feet AGL, or a faded magenta shading.
- Special Use Airspace (SUA) — restricted areas, prohibited areas, military operations areas (MOAs), and warning areas are shown in blue hatching or magenta shading with alphanumeric identifiers (e.g., R-2508).
