Positive and Negative Transfer of Learning

Positive transfer occurs when prior learning helps you acquire a new skill; negative transfer occurs when old habits interfere. Understanding both shapes how instructors sequence lessons and correct errors.

Every student pilot arrives at the flight school carrying a lifetime of experiences. Some of those experiences make learning to fly easier—you already know how to stay calm under pressure, or your driving experience gives you an intuitive sense of traffic spacing. Other habits can quietly work against you, like instinctively pressing the wrong pedal when you mean to steer. These two phenomena are called positive transfer of learning and negative transfer of learning, and the Aviation Instructor's Handbook explains them as central concepts in understanding how students acquire new skills.

Transfer of learning occurs whenever a previously learned skill, concept, or habit influences the acquisition of a new one. When that influence helps the student learn faster or perform more accurately, it is positive transfer. When the prior learning interferes—causing confusion, slower progress, or ingrained errors—it is negative transfer. The Aviation Instructor's Handbook's discussion of transfer of learning centers on these two categories; some situations may involve prior experience that has little or no bearing on the new task, though this is not treated as a formally named third category in the handbook.

A classic example of positive transfer is the student who has played a musical instrument. Years of reading ahead, coordinating two hands, and maintaining rhythm under pressure translate directly into the cockpit habit of scanning ahead and managing multiple tasks simultaneously. This is one illustrative example of how prior experience can carry over into flight training, though it is not drawn directly from the handbook's text. Negative Transfer in Action

Negative transfer is more insidious because the student often does not realize it is happening. A common example is the new student who has extensive experience driving a car. In an automobile, you steer by turning a wheel; the feet are used only for braking and the accelerator. On the ground in an airplane, directional control comes primarily from the rudder pedals. The car-driving habit can cause the student to instinctively try to steer with the yoke while neglecting the rudder. Another well-known example involves pilots transitioning from one aircraft type to another where a switch or control is in a different position—the old hand position fires an ingrained motor response that is now wrong. The FAA emphasizes that negative transfer is most dangerous when an old task and a new task are similar in appearance but different in required response—a condition that creates maximum confusion.

Why It Matters

Understanding transfer of learning helps instructors build lesson sequences that maximize the positive and minimize the negative. By identifying which prior experiences a student brings to the cockpit, the instructor can deliberately connect new material to helpful existing knowledge—this is one reason ground school precedes flight training. When negative transfer is anticipated (for example, when a student with thousands of hours in one type transitions to a new aircraft), the instructor can alert the student in advance, slow the pace of those specific lessons, and use deliberate practice to overwrite the old habit. Ignoring negative transfer can contribute to training setbacks and skill plateaus, so instructors should watch for it proactively.

Use the phrase "Same and helpful = Positive; Similar but different = Negative." If the old skill and the new skill demand the same response in a similar situation, expect a boost. If the old skill and the new skill look similar but demand opposite or different responses, expect interference and plan accordingly.

Common Test Traps

  • Confusing direction with similarity: The FAA knowledge test may describe a scenario where two tasks are similar and ask whether transfer is positive or negative. Remember: similarity alone does not guarantee positive transfer—you must also consider whether the required response is the same or different.
  • Forgetting zero transfer: Some questions include a scenario where prior experience has little or no effect at all. Recognize that this differs from negative transfer, and the distinction matters on the exam.
  • Assuming negative transfer is always obvious: The Aviation Instructor's Handbook stresses that negative transfer is most problematic precisely because students often do not recognize it themselves—they simply feel confused or perform poorly without knowing why. The instructor must identify it for them.
  • Mixing up the remedy: For negative transfer, the correct instructor response is deliberate practice with clear explanation of differences—not simply repeating the new task faster. Speed alone does not erase an ingrained motor habit.
