Every skill they have ever practiced—driving a car, playing a video game, riding a bicycle—has built neural pathways that will either help or hinder what they are about to learn. The study of transfer of learning examines exactly how previously learned skills and knowledge carry over (or fail to carry over) into new learning situations. The FAA's Aviation Instructor's Handbook identifies three distinct types: positive transfer, negative transfer, and zero transfer.
Positive transfer occurs when experience with one task directly improves performance on a new, similar task. A classic aviation example is the student who already plays a musical instrument—their fine motor coordination and ability to multitask under pressure can translate into quicker progress on cockpit tasks. More directly, a pilot transitioning from a Cessna 172 to another high-wing trainer with similar handling qualities will find that many control inputs feel familiar. Instructors should actively look for these opportunities and point them out, because students learn faster when they can connect new material to something they already do well.
Negative transfer is the more dangerous cousin. It happens when a previously learned skill actually interferes with learning a new one. The habits are so ingrained that the old response fires automatically, even when it is the wrong one. A well-known aviation example involves pilots who learned on aircraft with different throttle, control, or system configurations—deeply practiced habits from one airplane can create dangerous interference in a different cockpit, causing the pilot to reach for or operate a control the way the old aircraft required rather than the way the new one demands. Negative transfer is why thorough, early standardization of correct techniques matters so much. Once a bad habit is established, it can take many times longer to unlearn than it would have taken to teach the correct method from the start.
Zero transfer occurs when prior experience has essentially no effect—positive or negative—on learning a new task. A pilot learning to interpret a weather depiction chart from scratch, with no comparable prior experience, would likely experience zero transfer. The tasks are simply too different for prior knowledge to act as a bridge. While zero transfer is the least dangerous of the three, it does remind instructors that they cannot assume any shortcuts exist; the full instructional sequence is necessary.

Understanding transfer of learning is not just an academic exercise—it directly shapes how instructors sequence lessons, select training aids, and anticipate errors. When an instructor knows that a student has extensive experience with a similar aircraft, they can leverage positive transfer to accelerate training. Conversely, recognizing the potential for negative transfer allows the instructor to proactively address specific habits before they become entrenched. - Assuming positive transfer is automatic. Just because two tasks are similar does not guarantee positive transfer. The instructor must make the connection explicit for the student to benefit from it.
- Underestimating negative transfer's persistence. FAA guidance stresses that negative transfer involves deeply ingrained habits that actively interfere with new learning and can be especially resistant to correction. Test questions may ask you to identify which type of transfer involves old habits interfering with new learning—the answer is negative transfer.
- Overlooking zero transfer scenarios. Students sometimes expect that all prior flying experience will help in every new context. When tasks are truly dissimilar, instructors must communicate that prior habits do not apply and a fresh approach is required.
