U.S. Airspace Explained: Classes A Through G

U.S. airspace is layered like an upside-down wedding cake. It's one of the highest-yield topics on the FAA written test — and once you see the logic, it's straightforward. Here's each class in plain language, with the entry rules and weather minimums you'll be tested on.

Controlled vs. uncontrolled
Classes A, B, C, D, and E are controlled airspace (ATC services available). Class G is uncontrolled. "Controlled" doesn't mean you always need a clearance — it means ATC service is provided to aircraft that need it.
Class A
From 18,000 ft MSL up to FL600. IFR only — no VFR flight, period. A VFR Private Pilot won't operate here, but know it exists and that it requires an instrument rating and clearance.
Class B
Surrounds the busiest airports (major metros). You need an ATC clearance to enter ("cleared into the Bravo"), a Mode C transponder, and ADS-B Out. VFR weather minimums: 3 SM visibility and clear of clouds.
Class C
Mid-size airports with a control tower and radar service. You must establish two-way radio communication before entering, and carry a transponder with ADS-B Out. Standard VFR minimums apply (3 SM; 500 below / 1,000 above / 2,000 horizontal from clouds).
Class D
Smaller towered airports, typically up to 2,500 ft AGL. Requires two-way radio communication established before entry. Same standard VFR cloud-clearance minimums as Class C.
Class E
Controlled airspace that isn't A, B, C, or D — it fills the gaps. No clearance needed for VFR. Weather minimums increase above 10,000 ft MSL (to 5 SM and 1,000/1,000/1 SM cloud clearance). Watch for where Class E begins: the surface, 700 ft AGL, or 1,200 ft AGL, shown by the shaded magenta and blue rings on a sectional.
Class G
Uncontrolled airspace, usually close to the surface in less-populated areas. ATC has no authority here. It has the most permissive VFR minimums — as low as 1 SM and clear of clouds during the day below 1,200 ft AGL — but those minimums change at night and at higher altitudes.
The VFR weather minimums trap
This is the classic test question. For most controlled airspace below 10,000 ft MSL, memorize "3-152": 3 SM visibility, 1,000 ft above clouds, 500 ft below, and 2,000 ft horizontal. Class B is the exception (3 SM and simply clear of clouds), and Class G and above-10,000-ft minimums differ — drill those cases until they're automatic.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between "clearance" and "communication"?
Class B requires an explicit clearance to enter. Class C and D only require that ATC acknowledges you by name ("N12345, standby") — that establishes communication.
How do I tell Class E floors apart on a sectional?
The shaded magenta ring = Class E starting at 700 ft AGL; the shaded blue ring = 1,200 ft AGL; a dashed magenta line at an airport = Class E to the surface.
