Together, they blanket the vast majority of low-altitude airspace across the United States, and knowing exactly where one ends and the other begins—and what weather minimums apply to each—is one of the most important skills you'll build before your checkride.
Class G airspace is the airspace not designated as Class A, B, C, D, or E. It starts at the surface and extends upward to the base of the overlying controlled airspace, which is most commonly 700 feet AGL or 1,200 feet AGL, depending on the area. Near some airports, Class E may actually begin right at the surface. In truly remote areas, Class G can extend all the way up to 14,500 feet MSL, where Class A begins. There is no ATC clearance required to fly in Class G, and no radio communication is mandatory, though it is always good practice. Class E airspace is controlled airspace, but for VFR pilots it requires no clearance and no radio call—you simply have to meet the appropriate weather minimums before entering.
