Flying under visual flight rules (VFR) depends on the pilot being able to see and avoid other aircraft and terrain. To make that possible, regulations set minimum flight visibility and minimum distance from clouds for each class of airspace. These minimums exist so that a VFR pilot has enough room to spot conflicting traffic — including faster IFR traffic emerging from a cloud — and maneuver clear.
Why the numbers change
The required visibility and cloud clearances are not the same everywhere. They generally become more demanding with altitude and in busier airspace, and they relax somewhat in the lower-altitude, lower-traffic environment of Class G. The reasoning is straightforward: where aircraft are faster and more numerous, pilots need to see farther and stay farther from clouds to react in time.
Typical pattern
- In much of controlled airspace below 10,000 feet MSL, the standard is 3 statute miles of flight visibility with cloud clearances of 500 feet below, 1,000 feet above, and 2,000 feet horizontally.
- Above 10,000 feet MSL, both the required visibility and the cloud clearances increase, because true airspeeds — and therefore closure rates — are higher.
- Class B airspace uses a simpler standard of 3 statute miles visibility and clear of clouds, since all traffic there is positively controlled by ATC.
- Class G minimums are the most relaxed and vary with altitude and time of day.
Using the minimums
Because the exact figures depend on airspace class, altitude, and day versus night, pilots consult a current chart of VFR weather minimums rather than relying on memory for every case. The key skill is recognizing which airspace you are in and at what altitude, then applying the correct visibility and cloud-clearance values. When in doubt, the conservative choice is to give clouds a wide berth and treat marginal conditions as a reason to delay or divert.
