The Aviation Instructor's Handbook (FAA-H-8083-9) dedicates substantial attention to the post-flight critique because the way an instructor processes a flight lesson with a student directly determines how much of that lesson is actually retained, internalized, and applied on the next flight. A careless, rushed, or poorly structured debrief can undo much of the learning that occurred in the air. A skillfully conducted one can accelerate a student's progress by weeks.
Critique vs. Criticism: A Critical Distinction
The FAA-H-8083-9 draws a sharp and deliberate line between a critique and mere criticism. Step 2 — Student Self-Assessment First

The forward-looking close is also an opportunity to briefly preview any new material that will be introduced, giving the student something to review or mentally prepare before the next lesson.
