The farther from clouds the regulations require you to stay, the more reaction time both you and the instrument pilot have. This is the principle behind why faster, higher-altitude airspace carries larger clearance margins.
Additionally, maintaining cloud clearance is the pilot's responsibility regardless of whether ATC is providing traffic advisories. Even in Class C and Class B airspace — where radar service is mandatory — you are legally required to maintain the specified distances.
The Airspace Classes and Their Requirements
14 CFR 91.155 divides cloud clearance requirements into categories that follow the airspace class structure established by 14 CFR Part 71. Here is a complete breakdown of each category.
Class A Airspace
Class A airspace begins at 18,000 feet MSL and extends to FL600. VFR flight is simply not permitted in Class A airspace — all operations must be conducted under IFR. Therefore, no separate cloud clearance number applies; the rule is that you must not be there at all without an IFR clearance.
Class B Airspace
Class B airspace surrounds the nation's busiest commercial airports, typically from the surface up to 10,000 feet MSL (though the exact dimensions vary). The cloud clearance requirement here is simply: clear of clouds. No specific distance is stated because the FAA assumes that if you have received an ATC clearance to enter Class B, radar separation is providing the collision avoidance function that cloud distances provide elsewhere. The flight visibility minimum in Class B is 3 statute miles.
Class C and Class D Airspace
Class C airspace surrounds busy but not major-hub airports, generally from the surface up to 4,000 feet above the airport elevation, typically configured as a 5 NM radius surface area and a 10 NM radius shelf from 1,200 feet AGL up to 4,000 feet above airport elevation. Class D surrounds airports with operating control towers. Both carry the same cloud clearance standard: 500 feet below, 1,000 feet above, and 2,000 feet horizontal from clouds. Flight visibility must be at least 3 statute miles. A helpful way to picture the 500-1,000-2,000 rule is that you need more room above the cloud than below it, because aircraft climbing in the clouds tend to exit the top at full climb power and high speed.
Class E Airspace

- Confusing statute miles with nautical miles. All VFR visibility minimums in 91.155 are expressed in statute miles, not nautical miles. The FAA test often presents answers in both units.
- Forgetting the day/night distinction in Class G. Many students memorize only the daytime Class G minimums. At night, even the lowest Class G tier requires 3 SM visibility and standard cloud clearances — not just "clear of clouds."
- Applying controlled airspace rules to Class G. The 500/1,000/2,000 standard does NOT apply at and below 1,200 AGL in Class G during the day. The rule there is simply clear of clouds and 1 SM — many students default to the higher standard incorrectly.
- Overlooking the 10,000-foot breakpoint. Both Class E and Class G have a change in requirements at 10,000 feet MSL (not AGL). Students sometimes apply the low-altitude rules all the way up, or forget that 10,000 MSL is the trigger — not 10,000 AGL.
- Assuming Class B "clear of clouds" means no minimum visibility. Clear of clouds in Class B still requires 3 statute miles flight visibility. ATC radar separation replaces cloud distance, but it cannot replace your need to see and avoid other traffic visually.
Putting It All Together in the Cockpit
Before every VFR flight, check the weather briefing for ceilings and visibility along your entire route, not just at the departure airport. Identify which airspace classes you will be operating in and confirm the applicable minimums. If a scattered cloud layer at 3,500 feet puts you 400 feet below the clouds in Class E below 10,000 feet, you are in violation — you need either 500 feet of clearance below, or you must fly below the layer with sufficient terrain clearance. Planning ahead, rather than improvising en route, is the mark of a safe and competent pilot.
