VFR Flight Following Radio Procedures

VFR flight following gives student pilots real-time ATC radar advisories during cross-country flights. Learn exactly how to request it, what to say, and when traffic advisories may be terminated.

VFR flight following is one of the most valuable β€” and underutilized β€” tools available to a student pilot flying cross-country under visual flight rules. At its core, flight following is a workload-permitting radar advisory service that ATC provides to VFR aircraft, giving you traffic advisories, weather alerts, and an extra set of experienced eyes tracking your progress. Unlike an IFR clearance, flight following does not change your responsibility to see and avoid other aircraft, maintain VFR weather minimums, or navigate on your own. But it does place you inside the ATC system where controllers can alert you to potential conflicts, help you navigate around TFRs, and coordinate airspace transitions β€” all for free.

Many student pilots skip flight following because they feel intimidated by the radio work or fear taking up a controller's time. This article will walk you through every phase of the radio exchange β€” from the initial call-up to service termination β€” so you can confidently request and use flight following on your very next cross-country.

What Flight Following Actually Provides

Flight following falls under the category of radar traffic advisory service, described in the Aeronautical Information Manual (AIM). When you are in contact with an ARTCC (Air Route Traffic Control Center) or a TRACON (Terminal Radar Approach Control), the controller assigns your aircraft a discrete transponder code (a squawk code) and identifies you on radar. From that point, the controller can issue traffic advisories when other radar-identified aircraft may conflict with your path. These are worded as: "Traffic, 12 o'clock, five miles, northbound, altitude unknown."

It is critical to understand what flight following does not guarantee. The AIM makes clear that the provision of this service is contingent upon controller workload. A busy approach sector can β€” and legally must β€” terminate your advisories if traffic demands require it. You may also enter areas of radar coverage gaps, particularly at low altitudes in mountainous terrain, causing the service to drop. Flight following also does not constitute an ATC clearance to enter Class B or Class C airspace; you must still receive explicit clearance before entering those areas. Finally, ATC does not provide terrain clearance advisories for VFR flight following β€” that responsibility remains entirely yours.

Setting Up Before You Call

Good radio work starts long before you key the mic. Before requesting flight following, have the following information ready, because ATC will ask for most of it in the first exchange:

  • Your full tail number: Use the phonetic alphabet β€” "November Two Three Four Tango Foxtrot."
  • Aircraft type: "Cessna 172" or "Piper Cherokee" β€” be specific enough that the controller can estimate your performance.
  • Your current position: Reference a known fix, VOR, airport, or prominent landmark. "Ten miles southeast of Podunk Municipal" is far clearer than a vague direction.
  • Current altitude: State your actual altitude, not your intended cruise altitude, at the time of the call.
  • Your destination: The identifier of the destination airport β€” "Destination Kilo Foxtrot Oscar India."
  • Your planned cruise altitude: If you haven't yet reached it, say so β€” "climbing to five thousand five hundred."
  • VFR: Specify you are VFR so the controller immediately knows you are not expecting sequencing or instrument separation.

Before the call, also note the correct frequency. For departures from a Class D airport, the tower will often hand you off to departure control as part of your initial clearance. For en-route pickups, you can look up the relevant ARTCC or TRACON frequency on your sectional chart or in the Chart Supplement (formerly the Airport/Facility Directory). You can also ask any ATC facility for the correct frequency β€” they'll point you to the right sector.

The Initial Call: What to Say

The initial radio call for flight following follows a predictable structure. State the facility you are calling, identify yourself, give your position, and state your request. Here is a sample script you can model:

"Kansas City Center, Cessna Seven Two Four Tango Foxtrot, VFR request."

That brief opening lets the controller know you have a non-urgent request without cluttering the frequency. The controller will respond when workload permits β€” often with just your call sign β€” inviting you to continue. Then give your full information block:

"Kansas City Center, Cessna Seven Two Four Tango Foxtrot is a Cessna 172, ten miles southeast of Lee's Summit Municipal, five thousand five hundred, VFR to Springfield-Branson National, request flight following."

The controller will either accept your request and assign a transponder code, or β€” if workload is too high β€” decline service. If accepted, you'll hear something like:

"Cessna Seven Two Four Tango Foxtrot, Kansas City Center, radar contact, squawk four two three one, traffic advisories in effect."

Dial in that squawk code immediately, confirm your altitude encoder is on ALT mode, and read back the squawk code along with your call sign. Once the controller confirms radar contact, you are officially in the system.

Communicating During the Flight

Once flight following is established, the radio work is relatively light. You are expected to:

  • Acknowledge all traffic calls. If you see the traffic, say "Traffic in sight" or "Negative contact" if you cannot locate it. This tells the controller whether to keep issuing updates about that target.
  • Report when changing altitude. If you deviate from your filed altitude for weather, turbulence, or other reasons, let the controller know. This keeps your radar tag accurate.
  • Request frequency changes if needed. If you need to check weather on a HIWAS frequency or switch to CTAF at an uncontrolled airport, simply say "Request frequency change" and the controller will usually approve it for a short time. Always tell ATC before leaving the assigned frequency.
  • Report reaching your destination area. As you approach your destination, the Center or TRACON will often hand you off to approach control or a local TRACON. That facility may further hand you to the tower. Each handoff is a new frequency with the same basic exchange β€” check in with your call sign, aircraft type, position, altitude, and destination.

Transitioning Through Class B and Class C Airspace

Being on flight following does not grant you automatic entry into Class B or Class C airspace. For Class C, you must establish two-way radio communication before entering β€” but once you are on flight following and the approach controller explicitly tells you to enter their airspace or issues you a transponder code and radar identifies you within Class C, that generally satisfies the communication requirement under 14 CFR Part 91. For Class B, you must receive an explicit clearance β€” typically the phrase "cleared into the Class Bravo airspace" β€” before entering, regardless of whether you already have flight following. Never assume radar contact equals a clearance to enter Class B.

Terminating Flight Following

You can terminate flight following at any time simply by informing the controller. Common termination phrases include:

"Seven Two Four Tango Foxtrot, request frequency change, canceling flight following."

ATC may also terminate service due to workload, radar coverage loss, or when you are handed off to a tower frequency. When you land and close out with a tower, flight following is automatically ended. If you were receiving Center advisories in an area without a tower, you should explicitly cancel with the controller before switching to CTAF, or call them back after landing if you can.

Key Numbers and Rules

  • Flight following is available from ARTCCs and TRACONs β€” not from FSS or AWOS/ASOS.
  • Service is workload-permitting β€” the controller can terminate at any time without prior notice.
  • A discrete squawk code will be assigned; verify your transponder is in ALT mode so Mode C altitude reporting is active.
  • You must still maintain VFR weather minimums (14 CFR 91.155) at all times β€” ATC does not relieve you of this requirement.
  • See-and-avoid responsibility remains entirely with you, per 14 CFR 91.113.
  • Class B entry requires an explicit ATC clearance; Class C requires established two-way communication β€” flight following status alone does not satisfy Class B entry.
  • If ATC says "radar service terminated, squawk VFR," dial 1200 into your transponder and resume self-navigation.

Memory Aid

For your initial call-up, use the acronym PTADC to remember the information block: Position, Type of aircraft, Altitude, Destination, and Cruise altitude (planned). This maps directly to what a controller needs to identify and track you: where you are right now, what kind of plane you're flying, what altitude you're at, where you're going, and what altitude you'll be cruising at. Run through PTADC before you key the mic and your call will be smooth every time.

Common Test Traps

  • "Flight following provides separation from other VFR aircraft." False. ATC provides advisories, not separation, to VFR aircraft. Separation is only guaranteed for IFR traffic in controlled airspace.
  • "Squawking the assigned code means I'm cleared into Class B." False. A discrete squawk and radar contact do not constitute a Class B clearance. You need the specific words "cleared into the Class Bravo."
  • "If I'm on flight following, ATC will keep the service the whole flight." False. The AIM states service is workload-permitting and may be terminated at any time.
  • "I don't need to watch for traffic because ATC is watching for me." False. 14 CFR 91.113 places the see-and-avoid duty on the pilot-in-command at all times, with or without ATC assistance.
  • "I should squawk 1200 while on flight following." False. You must squawk the discrete code assigned by ATC. Only return to 1200 after service is terminated or when directed by ATC.
